Do Not Envy Evil Men

24 Do not be (A)envious of evil men,
Nor desire to be with them;
For their heart devises violence,
And their lips talk of troublemaking.

Through wisdom a house is built,
And by understanding it is established;
By knowledge the rooms are filled
With all precious and pleasant riches.

(B)A wise man is strong,
Yes, a man of knowledge increases strength;
(C)For by wise counsel you will wage your own war,
And in a multitude of counselors there is safety.

(D)Wisdom is too lofty for a fool;
He does not open his mouth in the gate.

He who (E)plots to do evil
Will be called a [a]schemer.
The devising of foolishness is sin,
And the scoffer is an abomination to men.

10 If you (F)faint in the day of adversity,
Your strength is small.

11 (G)Deliver those who are drawn toward death,
And hold back those stumbling to the slaughter.
12 If you say, “Surely we did not know this,”
Does not (H)He who weighs the hearts consider it?
He who keeps your soul, does He not know it?
And will He not render to each man (I)according to his deeds?

13 My son, (J)eat honey because it is good,
And the honeycomb which is sweet to your taste;
14 (K)So shall the knowledge of wisdom be to your soul;
If you have found it, there is a [b]prospect,
And your hope will not be cut off.

15 Do not lie in wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous;
Do not plunder his resting place;
16 (L)For a righteous man may fall seven times
And rise again,
(M)But the wicked shall fall by calamity.

17 (N)Do not rejoice when your enemy falls,
And do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles;
18 Lest the Lord see it, and [c]it displease Him,
And He turn away His wrath from him.

19 (O)Do not fret because of evildoers,
Nor be envious of the wicked;
20 For there will be no prospect for the evil man;
The lamp of the wicked will be put out.

21 My son, (P)fear the Lord and the king;
Do not associate with those given to change;
22 For their calamity will rise suddenly,
And who knows the ruin those two can bring?

Further Sayings of the Wise

23 These things also belong to the wise:

(Q)It is not good to [d]show partiality in judgment.
24 (R)He who says to the wicked, “You are righteous,”
Him the people will curse;
Nations will abhor him.
25 But those who rebuke the wicked will have (S)delight,
And a good blessing will come upon them.

26 He who gives a right answer kisses the lips.

27 (T)Prepare your outside work,
Make it fit for yourself in the field;
And afterward build your house.

28 (U)Do not be a witness against your neighbor without cause,
[e]For would you deceive with your lips?
29 (V)Do not say, “I will do to him just as he has done to me;
I will render to the man according to his work.”

30 I went by the field of the lazy man,
And by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding;
31 And there it was, (W)all overgrown with thorns;
Its surface was covered with nettles;
Its stone wall was broken down.
32 When I saw it, I considered it well;
I looked on it and received instruction:
33 (X)A little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to rest;
34 (Y)So shall your poverty come like [f]a prowler,
And your need like [g]an armed man.

Lot’s Captivity and Rescue

14 And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king (A)of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of (B)Elam, and Tidal king of [a]nations, that they made war with Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of (C)Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, (D)Zoar). All these joined together in the Valley of Siddim (E)(that is, the Salt Sea). Twelve years (F)they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

In the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him came and attacked (G)the Rephaim in Ashteroth Karnaim, (H)the Zuzim in Ham, (I)the Emim in Shaveh Kiriathaim, (J)and the Horites in their mountain of Seir, as far as El Paran, which is by the wilderness. Then they turned back and came to En Mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and attacked all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites who dwelt (K)in Hazezon Tamar.

And the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) went out and joined together in battle in the Valley of Siddim against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of [b]nations, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar—four kings against five. 10 Now the Valley of Siddim was full of (L)asphalt pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled; some fell there, and the remainder fled (M)to the mountains. 11 Then they took (N)all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, and went their way. 12 They also took Lot, Abram’s (O)brother’s son (P)who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.

13 Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the (Q)Hebrew, for (R)he dwelt by [c]the terebinth trees of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aner; (S)and they were allies with Abram. 14 Now (T)when Abram heard that (U)his brother was taken captive, he armed his three hundred and eighteen trained servants who were (V)born in his own house, and went in pursuit (W)as far as Dan. 15 He divided his forces against them by night, and he and his servants (X)attacked them and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is [d]north of Damascus. 16 So he (Y)brought back all the goods, and also brought back his brother Lot and his goods, as well as the women and the people.

17 And the king of Sodom (Z)went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the (AA)King’s Valley), (AB)after his return from the [e]defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him.

Abram and Melchizedek(AC)

18 Then (AD)Melchizedek king of Salem brought out (AE)bread and wine; he was (AF)the priest of (AG)God Most High. 19 And he blessed him and said:

(AH)“Blessed be Abram of God Most High,
(AI)Possessor of heaven and earth;
20 And (AJ)blessed be God Most High,
Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.”

And he (AK)gave him [f]a tithe of all.

21 Now the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the [g]persons, and take the goods for yourself.”

22 But Abram (AL)said to the king of Sodom, “I (AM)have raised my hand to the Lord, God Most High, (AN)the Possessor of heaven and earth, 23 that (AO)I will take nothing, from a thread to a sandal strap, and that I will not take anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich’— 24 except only what the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men who went with me: Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.”

God’s Covenant with Abram(AP)

15 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram (AQ)in a vision, saying, (AR)“Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your (AS)shield, [h]your exceedingly (AT)great reward.”

(AU)But Abram said, “Lord God, what will You give me, (AV)seeing I [i]go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” Then Abram said, “Look, You have given me no offspring; indeed (AW)one[j] born in my house is my heir!”

And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “This one shall not be your heir, but one who (AX)will come from your own body shall be your heir.” Then He brought him outside and said, “Look now toward heaven, and (AY)count the (AZ)stars if you are able to number them.” And He said to him, (BA)“So shall your (BB)descendants be.”

And he (BC)believed in the Lord, and He (BD)accounted it to him for righteousness.

Then He said to him, “I am the Lord, who (BE)brought you out of (BF)Ur of the Chaldeans, (BG)to give you this land to inherit it.”

And he said, “Lord God, (BH)how shall I know that I will inherit it?”

So He said to him, “Bring Me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” 10 Then he brought all these to Him and (BI)cut them in two, down the middle, and placed each piece opposite the other; but he did not cut (BJ)the birds in two. 11 And when the vultures came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.

12 Now when the sun was going down, (BK)a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, horror and great darkness fell upon him. 13 Then He said to Abram: “Know certainly (BL)that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and (BM)they will afflict them four hundred years. 14 And also the nation whom they serve (BN)I will judge; afterward (BO)they shall come out with great possessions. 15 Now as for you, (BP)you shall [k]go (BQ)to your fathers in peace; (BR)you shall be buried at a good old age. 16 But (BS)in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the iniquity (BT)of the Amorites (BU)is not yet complete.”

17 And it came to pass, when the sun went down and it was dark, that behold, there appeared a smoking oven and a burning torch that (BV)passed between those pieces. 18 On the same day the Lord (BW)made a covenant with Abram, saying:

(BX)“To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates— 19 the Kenites, the Kenezzites, the Kadmonites, 20 the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, 21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”

Hagar and Ishmael

16 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, (BY)had borne him no children. And she had (BZ)an Egyptian maidservant whose name was (CA)Hagar. (CB)So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the Lord (CC)has restrained me from bearing children. Please, (CD)go in to my maid; perhaps I shall [l]obtain children by her.” And Abram (CE)heeded the voice of Sarai. Then Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife, after Abram (CF)had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan. So he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress became (CG)despised in her [m]eyes.

Then Sarai said to Abram, [n]“My wrong be upon you! I gave my maid into your embrace; and when she saw that she had conceived, I became despised in her eyes. (CH)The Lord judge between you and me.”

(CI)So Abram said to Sarai, “Indeed your maid is in your hand; do to her as you please.” And when Sarai dealt harshly with her, (CJ)she fled from her presence.

Now the (CK)Angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, (CL)by the spring on the way to (CM)Shur. And He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s maid, where have you come from, and where are you going?”

She said, “I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.”

The Angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress, and (CN)submit yourself under her hand.” 10 Then the Angel of the Lord said to her, (CO)“I will multiply your descendants exceedingly, so that they shall not be counted for multitude.” 11 And the Angel of the Lord said to her:

“Behold, you are with child,
(CP)And you shall bear a son.
You shall call his name [o]Ishmael,
Because the Lord has heard your affliction.
12 (CQ)He shall be a wild man;
His hand shall be against every man,
And every man’s hand against him.
(CR)And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.”

13 Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, You-Are-[p]the-God-Who-Sees; for she said, “Have I also here [q]seen Him (CS)who sees me?” 14 Therefore the well was called (CT)Beer Lahai Roi;[r] observe, it is (CU)between Kadesh and Bered.

15 So (CV)Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram named his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.

The Sign of the Covenant(CW)

17 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord (CX)appeared to Abram and said to him, (CY)“I am [s]Almighty God; (CZ)walk before Me and be (DA)blameless. And I will make My (DB)covenant between Me and you, and (DC)will multiply you exceedingly.” Then Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying: “As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be (DD)a father of [t]many nations. No longer shall (DE)your name be called [u]Abram, but your name shall be [v]Abraham; (DF)for I have made you a father of [w]many nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make (DG)nations of you, and (DH)kings shall come from you. And I will (DI)establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, (DJ)to be God to you and (DK)your descendants after you. Also (DL)I give to you and your descendants after you the land (DM)in[x] which you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession; and (DN)I will be their God.”

And God said to Abraham: “As for you, (DO)you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations. 10 This is My covenant which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: (DP)Every male child among you shall be circumcised; 11 and you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be (DQ)a sign of the covenant between Me and you. 12 He who is eight days old among you (DR)shall be circumcised, every male child in your generations, he who is born in your house or bought with money from any foreigner who is not your descendant. 13 He who is born in your house and he who is bought with your money must be circumcised, and My covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. 14 And the uncircumcised male child, who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person (DS)shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.”

15 Then God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but [y]Sarah shall be her name. 16 And I will bless her (DT)and also give you a son by her; then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother (DU)of nations; (DV)kings of peoples shall be from her.”

17 Then Abraham fell on his face (DW)and laughed, and said in his heart, “Shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child? 18 And Abraham (DX)said to God, “Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!”

19 Then God said: “No, (DY)Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My (DZ)covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him. 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and (EA)will multiply him exceedingly. He shall beget (EB)twelve princes, (EC)and I will make him a great nation. 21 But My (ED)covenant I will establish with Isaac, (EE)whom Sarah shall bear to you at this (EF)set time next year.” 22 Then He finished talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.

23 So Abraham took Ishmael his son, all who were born in his house and all who were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very same day, as God had said to him. 24 Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 25 And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 26 That very same day Abraham was circumcised, and his son Ishmael; 27 and (EG)all the men of his house, born in the house or bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him.
